Asteroids Million Mile Mission

Asteroid Bicycles want to deliver 1million e-Cargo Bike miles around Sussex in 5years.

Sussex as a county is approximately 100 miles wide and 40mile high. Sussex also has a network of 2000 miles of public rights of way (in East Sussex alone).  Public rights of way are Footpaths, Bridleways and Byways that link to slower roads throughout the county.

The UK does not have the best cycle lane network like the rest of Europe, however the UK does have a multi-use network of public rights of ways throughout the UK. Asteroid have developed an off-road e-Cargo bike. We want to join these 2 ideas to create a uniquely British solution.

Asteroid developed this for the Million Mile Mission. Using 26-inch mountain bike (MTB) wheels on a hub steering cargo bike offers several benefits. The larger wheels provide better performance on rougher terrains, offering a smoother ride and higher load capacity.

With 20-inch front and 26-inch wheels back. Asteroid Work uses the 20inch front frame platform from the Family model and the rear 26inch wheel frame from the Adventure model. This 20-26 wheel combination is the format that commercial couriers prefer for all day riding comfort.

20-inch wheels on cargo bikes offers several benefits, including improved manoeuvrability for navigating tight spaces and a lower centre of gravity for better stability and handling when carrying heavy loads.

Why Hub Steering?

Hub steering is a big part of the Asteroid Cargo Bike design. Why? Hub steering allows the front wheel to be closer to the load, making a shorter wheelbase, which helps with steering and handling. Cargo Bikes have an inherent wobble, due to the conventional fork. "Hub-Steering" hubs do not wobble, making them ideal for Cargo Bikes.

Split-Frame

Travel further, make it an adventure. Cargo Bikes are long and difficult to store securely and transport. Asteroid Cargo Bikes have a Modular "Split-Frame" design allowing you to split the frame down for transporting on a train or plane? or just cycle it all the way, following everything from old rail trails, ghost towns from a forgotten era, or journey through landscapes around the world.

Small and Smart:

With a 200 kg (440 lb) Max weight, Asteroid can be configured into a short 40cm front loader with 20inch wheels. It will carry more than you expect. Asteroid 60cm option will keep the load safe and low, allowing you to carry three kids plus groceries, or as your kids grow, the family dog can come along too. The 20inch model with 40cm box is shorter than a regular bike, so that you can use secure public bike lockups or vertical storage in the corner of the office.

Safety for your family:

Asteroid Cargo Bikes use a modular systems allows a range of passenger accessories, from toddlers to 2x 7year olds. With a ply cargo box, carry your children, upfront where you can see them. Lower is safer for everyone, even your spouse can catch a lift.

All Asteroid Cargo bikes are designed to change when your lifestyle changes. This is the ultimate utility vehicle. With the front and rear axle decks, you are able to carry long loads like, ladders, planks of wood and plumbing tubes. Whether commercial or just doing some DIY, Asteroid are designed to carry almost anything.

Year-Round Riding:

Surface water after rain, makes things unpleasant. Asteroid have designed everything for wet weather cycling. Asteroid are working on rain covers for our 40 & 60cm boxes, keeping your kids dry and cozy. Asteroid bikes have solutions, from DIY rain guard templates to all weather passenger comfort options.

Rear Rack to Stack:

Asteroid Cargo Bikes have 3 different platforms 40cm, 60cm and 100cm at request. Asteroid developed the 40cm platform to fit into a 195cm city council bicycle lock-up. The 40cm option is shorter than most regular bicycles and will easily fit into a UK elevator. Asteroid Bikes can be stored or parked vertically, perfect for city apartments and Victorian flats.

Asteroid Impact

Public right of ways (bridleways and byways) are often surrounded by hedge rows and are a natural corridor for wildlife.  Bridleways and byways need preservation as they act as natures corridors.  For Every cargo bike sold Asteroid will contribute 5% to a "Public right of way Regeneration Fund" to help with the replanting of native trees, creating more nesting environments for British birds.  This regeneration fund will also improve and extend this network.
