How we work

Make it locally in the UK.
The UK has been here before with the Arts & Craft movement.  While it started as a reaction against industrialization, the Arts and Crafts movement's emphasis on functionality, simplicity, and natural materials paved the way for later design movements. This also had a strong connection to nature and strong ethics influencing social reform.

Being based in Sussex, Asteroid Bicycles has a lot of similarities with the Arts & Craft movement.  Asteroid Bicycles has set a 1 million mile target, and we want to have a strong ethical approach, so that, like the Arts & Craft movement, we can influence social reform. Asteroid has a robust supply chain branching out from Newhaven in Sussex. Manufacturing in the UK means that we can easily reduce, reuse and recycle.  Asteroid can offer repair, trade-in and refurbished models, so that the products lifecycle can be extended.

Local manufacturing creates local jobs, fuelling the local economy.

Materials:
Asteroid needed to compete with global manufacturing prices.  Asteroid use laser-tube cutting to reduce the labour costs normally associated with frame manufacture.  We have chosen T45 steel, also known as BS 4T45, is a British Standard Aerospace Series steel, primarily manufactured in the UK. While its original development was driven by the British aerospace industry for aircraft like the Spitfire and Hurricane, it's still produced extensively in the UK.

Marine plywood available in the UK is manufactured to British standards (BS1088).

Asteroid Solutions

Hub Steering

Rear loaders, they look easy to ride. Loads on the back make the front end too light. This weight shift makes rear loaders unpredictable.

Hub is a key feature of Asteroid frames. Front Loaders are a lot safer,  however the wobble is noticeable when starting. Hub steering has more stability and allows loads to be placed either side and above the front wheel.

Split Frame design

Asteroids have developed the Split-Frame design to help resolves the storage & security issues, but also helps with  product adaptability.  Every model has the Split Frame fixings in the same position, making the all models backward compatible. This feature allows you to keep two front ends for different tasks

Stevo was trained in a Bauhaus Design school and has used the core principle of Form Follows Function to bring you the modular cargo bike that is extremely versatile throughout its life cycle.
